What is it?

This is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria called “Chlamydia trachomatis".

This bacterium may affect internal and external genitalia as fallopian tubes and ovaries.

It is transmitted through unprotected sex, either through anal, oral or vaginal sex.

Furthermore, if the infected person passes their hands on their genitals or dirty your hands with infected secretions and then touch your eyes, the infection is passed to them and creates annoying problems.

Another way of transmission is from an infected mother to child during birth.



Symptoms

  • Inter-menstrual bleeding (between periods)
  • Vaginal bleeding after sex after
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pain during intercourse or dyspareunia
  • Fever
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Constant need to urinate
  • Unusual vaginal discharge, odor and color different
  • Pain, itching, bleeding or discharge from the rectum
  • Redness, itching or discharge from eyes




Treatment

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease easily treated and cured with appropriate antibiotic treatment like: tetracyclines, azithromycin or erythromycin.
It is estimated that the infection can be cured in a matter of 4 weeks.

If not treated properly, it can lead to serious complications, which would be best avoided as

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Sterility
  • Salpingitis
  • Ectopic Pregnancy


Both partners must be treated to prevent reinfection.



If you suspect you have this infection, better abstain from sex until you correct the problem to avoid infecting others.

Do not forget the importance of safe sex for your health and private life, with adequate protection of a barrier contraceptive such as condoms to prevent transmission of STDs.
