Is a contraceptive method, consisting of a medicine called medroxyprogesterone, "this is a drug similar to progesterone that women usually produce every month in their menstrual cycle. Its main feature is that it prevents pregnancy for up to three months, unlike other injections whose effect lasts for 1 month.

This birth control shot "depo provera" works by preventing ovulation. By preventing the ovary from releasing the egg it is unlikely to produce a successful pregnancy.



How is it used?



Contraceptive Injection should be administered in the buttocks or arm.

The first injection should be placed within the first 5 days of the menstrual cycle, which means; between 5 days after the onset of menstruation.

The following doses should be administrated at the same date three months after and three months from there on.

It should be administered in this way to prevent fertilization, since otherwise the shot is given three months after the ovarian function will return to normal soon.
Side Effects

Some possible side effects that may occur are:

  • Irregular bleeding or spotting in the menstrual cycle.
  • Increase or decrease of blood in the menstrual bleeding
  • Amenorrhea (lack of menstruation, not related to pregnancy) after a year of use of depo Provera.
  • Weight gain
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness

 




Advantages and disadvantages

The effectiveness of this contraceptive method is so good it is compared with salpingectomy or tubal ligation.

It is also more effective than many other contraceptive methods in preventing pregnancy like condoms, contraceptive pills or diaphragms.

Another advantage of this method is that it can be used in lactating women without problems or harmful effects to the baby.

Since it is not a barrier method does not protect against transmission of STD’s





Contraindications

Should not be wearied by women with:

  • Liver disease
  • Phlebitis
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Breast cancer
  • Uterine cancer or some other  reproductive organ

  • Pregnancy
  • Allergy to the medicine
